Tip and Split Calculator
Quickly figure out how much to tip and how to share the bill. Type in the amount on the check, pick a tip percentage and say how many people are paying.
You get the tip in dollars, the total with tip, and the share for each person, so splitting a restaurant bill or a delivery order takes no mental math.
How to use it
- Enter the amount on the bill. Many people tip on the amount before tax, but you can enter whichever amount you prefer.
- Type the tip percentage you want to leave.
- Enter how many people are splitting the bill.
- Read the share per person and the tip in the results box.
How it works
Tip = bill × tip % ÷ 100; Total = bill + tip; Each person = total ÷ number of people
For example, an 18% tip on a $50 bill is 50 × 18 ÷ 100 = $9, so the total is $59. Split between two people, each pays $29.50.
Results are shown rounded to the cent. When a total does not divide evenly, one person may need to pay a cent more so the bill adds up.
Worked example
| Bill amount | 86.4 $ |
|---|---|
| Tip | 18 % |
| Number of people | 3 |
| Each person pays | $33.98 |
| Tip amount | $15.55 |
| Total with tip | $101.95 |
| Tip per person | $5.18 |
Questions and answers
Should I tip on the amount before or after tax?
Both are common. Tipping on the pre-tax amount is traditional; tipping on the total is simpler and a little more generous. Enter whichever amount you want the tip based on.
How much should I tip?
Customs vary by country and by service. In the US, 15 to 20% is common at sit-down restaurants. Adjust the percentage to whatever feels right for the service you received.
How do I split a bill unevenly?
This tool splits evenly. For uneven splits, run it once per person with their own items as the bill amount and the same tip percentage.
Why does the per-person amount have a fraction of a cent?
It is shown rounded to the nearest cent. If the total does not divide evenly, round up the share or have one person cover the extra cent.
Can I use it for delivery or a taxi?
Yes. Enter the fare or order total as the bill and the tip percentage you want to give.
